The goal of spa water treatment is to maintain hygienic and clear water without costing an arm and leg and without hours of daily maintenance. We want you and your family to enjoy your spa; not to spend time worrying about how to balance the water or issues such as itchy skin and toxic fumes!
The five basics of water balancing are: pH, Total Alkalinity, Sanitizer, Water Hardness, and Total dissolved solids (TDS). We will discuss one per month. Let’s begin with pH which some consider to be the most important component of water balance.
Spas, due to their small volume, are prone to fluctuations in pH, so this parameter must be monitored closely. Use test strips or test kits employing liquid reagents to analyze water quality. The ideal pH range for spas is 7.2 to 7.8. Any reading below 7.2 means your water is acidic. To correct this, you would add Spa Up. If the pH reading is above 7.8, it means the water is basic or alkaline. To correct this, you would add Spa Down.
Water with low pH can cause corrosion of metal components such as heating elements, pump seals, and cause eye and skin irritation.
Water with high pH can lead to scale formation on plumbing and surfaces, cloudy water, and eye and skin irritation.
Check back next month as we discuss Total Alkalinity, the following month Sanitizer, Water Hardness, and then Total Dissolved Solids. Mastering these five areas of water balancing will allow you and your family hours of enjoyment- not hours of upkeep.
Can you feel the change in the weather? The brisk, cool tinge in the morning air? Fall is my favorite time of year and at the same time I do my least favorite thing – change the water in my hot tub. Waters Choice recommends changing the water in your hot tub only once a year. This is great news since most other water care systems say you should drain and clean your hot tub every 3 to 4 months and even more if it’s used often. It’s a good idea to drain your spa right before it’s time to add your Waters Choice so you don’t waste any enzymes.

Here are some tips on how to use your 5 senses to detect if a pool is clean.
Smell- While many people think that a pool with a strong chemical smell means it is clean, the opposite is actually true. The strong chemical smell is not caused by chlorine itself, but how it reacts with pollutants. This means that a strong chemical smell in a pool is a sign of lots of pollutants that may be causing a dangerous environment for you to swim in. If you smell an extremely strong chemical smell, stay away from that pool or spa!
Sight- Any pool or spa you are going to enter should have clear, blue water that is free of obvious debris. If pool or spa has a green tint, this is a sign of a pH imbalance that may be leaving the water unsafe to swim in. Also, if you see a large amount of leaves, sticks or other debris, the chances of that pool’s maintenance schedule being neglected are probably high. Make sure to give any pool or spa a good visual inspection before you enter.
Touch- If you start to think a pool or spa may not be as clean as you would like, feel the tiles to make sure they feel smooth, and see if they are clean of algae, dirt, or other pollutants. If the tiles feel dirty, then the pool or spa is unclean also.
Sound- Typically when you are in a clean pool, you will be able to hear the pool equipment working while submerged in the water, or around where the pump is. A lack of sound may indicate a pool that is not being properly maintained.
Taste- Just Kidding! Do not taste the water!

In fact, skin cancer can sometimes be more severe in darker skinned individuals because it can go longer without being caught because of a lack of awareness on the issue of skin cancer. Everyone should be applying sunblock, no matter their skin pigment.
Myth 4) Water proof sunblocks do not need to be reapplied- Many people think that a waterproof sunblock can protect them for countless hours of swimming activity, but this isn’t true. There is no such thing as a waterproof sunblock, only water resistant ones. All sunblocks are affected by exposure to water, and should be reapplied frequently.
