Waters Choice Blog
Springtime can be a great time of the year to change your water in your hot tub. Waters Choice recommends changing the water in your hot tub only once a year. This is great news since most other water care systems say you should drain and clean your hot tub every 3 to 4 months and even more if it’s used often. It’s a good idea to drain your spa right before it’s time to add your Waters Choice so you don’t waste any enzymes.
What to do when you’re ready to drain your spa:
Now you’re ready to go! Your hot tub will function better and have fewer issues now that it has been thoroughly cleaned out. You can now look forward to another great year of hot tub enjoyment.

How often are you cleaning your hot tub? This will keep your hot tub in great working order so you can enjoy it for many years to come. You will need a shop vac, hose, spa cleaning mitt, towel, and a few hours of time.
The very first thing that you need to do is to get rid of your power source. Nothing is worse than worrying about being electrocuted while you’re doing your quarterly maintenance. Now, you are ready to drain your water. You can use the drain at the bottom of your spa and use a pump to help with this process. While the water is draining, now is the perfect time to clean your filters. Remove the filters and hose them down to get them as clean and as white as possible.
You are now ready to blow out your pipes. Plug all of your holes except for one and use a shop vac to blow out any residue from your pipe holes. Repeat this process with each hole and then remove any remaining water from the spa.
Now you can put on your spa cleaning mitt and wipe down the entirety of your spa. These work wonders and are fairly cheap as well. Once you’ve gone over your spa a few times with the mitt, repeat this process with a towel. Your spa should be looking pretty great at this point, and we’re getting close to being done.
The next step is to start putting everything back together. Put the filters back in their place, and make sure the drain for the spa is sealed. Begin filling your spa through one of the filters and turn the power back on once you get above half of your desired water height. Once you fill your spa completely, turn on the cleaning cycle and let it do its job.

Did you know that the first rubber duck was actually a hunting decoy and was patented on October 26, 1886 by George Nye? According to World Wide Weird Holidays, the rubber duck wasn’t patented as a toy until May 8, 1928 by LL Smart.
The patent shows that the toy was specifically designed and weighted to return to its upright position when tipped. Often, Rubber Ducks also contained a squeaker to make it infamous noise. It continues to this day to be a popular bath toy for children.
In 2013, the Rubber Ducky became inducted in to the Toy Hall of Fame. Thereby earning this honor with only 52 other toys.
One of the most interesting stories related to the rubber ducky involves a shipment of 28,000 rubber ducks that fell off a cargo ship in the Pacific Ocean in 1992. These incredible Floaters have been spotted around the world, even floating more than 17,000 miles. Thousands are still floating today and can be found as faded white ducks on the beach. The next time you go to the beach, be on the lookout for one of these that would make a great toy for your bathtub or hot tub.
Probably, one of the most famous references to the rubber duck involves Ernie the Muppet from Sesame Street. He sang the “Rubber Ducky” ditty forty-seven years ago, on Jan. 13, 1970; hence today being Rubber Ducky Day. The song flew to No. 16 on the Billboard chart.
What was your favorite bath toy when you were younger? Did you have rubber ducky as a child?

Book travel plans as early as possible- The holiday season is a crazy time to travel, and flights, car rentals, hotels, and other travel arrangements book up quickly. Try to make your plans as early as possible, and book your travel arrangements as soon as you can.
Travel as light as possible- Airports during the holidays are usually completely crazy, and you may need to move quickly to get to your next flight. The last thing you need is a bunch of unnecessary luggage to slow you down while running to your gate. Make sure to only bring the necessities when traveling during the holidays.

Be patient- Sometimes, no matter how much you plan ahead, you will still have some setbacks while traveling during this busy season. It is important to stay calm, and realize you are supposed to be enjoying this time off. You will get there when you get there, and stressing about running late won’t help anything. Here are some fun ways to incorporate your hot tub into your Halloween party this year to make it a unique and chilling experience. See below for tips to help you throw the best Halloween hot tub party around.
Don’t Horrify Your Guests-Make sure your hot tub is clean
Though you may want to scare your guests on Halloween, you don’t want to scare them out of your hot tub. Make sure you test the water and balance the pH and alkalinity and clean the filter.
Tell people you have a hot tub so that they bring a swimsuit and wear costumes that they can easily change out of. For even more fun, test the creativity of your guests by challenging them to make their swimsuit a part of their costume.
How about transforming your spa into an “Acid Tub” for the evening? Set your lights to green. You can add a submersible green LED light for an even more striking effect. You could hang a “Danger Acid” sign near your hot tub to create the perfect illusion.
Or, how about a large witch’s cauldron where your guests become the missing ingredient. Change your LED lighting to purple and create a sign that reads “Boiling Witch’s Cauldron: Humans Needed”. Place some witch’s hats, brooms and other witch props around the hot tub to reinforce the illusion. Then, watch your spa transform into a cauldron as you take off your hot tub cover and see purple-lit steam float into the sky.
Or, if you really want to spook your guests, turn your hot tub into a “Dead Man’s Pool” for the night. Switch your LED lighting to red and add submersible red LED lights to your water for a more blood-red appearance. Place plastic skeletons, bones, body parts, and skulls on the area around your hot tub. Then, hang a sign that reads, “Dead Man’s Pool: Enter If You Dare”
You could set up a fog machine somewhere in your backyard to create a truly eerie environment. Stick fake tombstones in your grass, lay skeletons on the floor and put rubber snakes, insects and rats in your bushes. You can also cut out bat shapes from black construction paper and hang them in trees, drape fake cobwebs over your bushes and stick motion sensor props near where people will be.
A party isn’t a party without music, and great Halloween tunes can really help set the mood. You could start with mix of Halloween classics like Thriller and Monster Mash and Jaws and Psycho theme songs. As the night progresses, you can play normal party songs or alternate between Halloween classics and traditional party music.
Sickeningly Good Food and Drinks
Some great snack ideas are chips (Bone Shards) and salsa labeled “Blended Man” and guacamole labeled “Blended Frog”. Pinterest has a plethora of ideas. Make sure you have plenty of water available. It is important that guests stay hydrated while soaking in warm water.
Have a Ghoulishly Good Time!
What is your scariest story you can share in the hot tub?
This single 12 oz bottle contains a powerful blend of enzymes that allow you to dramatically decrease the use of traditional spa chemicals. This one bottle of enzymes is what is doing the heavy workload of maintaining crystal clear water for one month. Many people think this is a water conditioner only, when in fact, it is so much more! It is important to add the entire bottle each month.
What experience have you had with Waters Choice enzymes? We very much want to know!

In part 1 of this entry, we gave our first 10 favorite Olympic swimming inspirational quotes in preparation for the upcoming Olympic games in Rio. If you have not gotten a chance to check out part 1 yet, make sure to read it now. Here are our final 10 motivational swimming quotes, and some of the best quotes from top level swimmers.
1) “So many people along the way, whatever it is you aspire to do, will tell you it can’t be done. But all it takes is imagination. You dream. You plan. You reach.” – Michael Phelps
2) “When I go out and race, I’m not trying to beat opponents, I’m trying to beat what I have done … to beat myself, basically. People find that hard to believe because we’ve had such a bias to always strive to win things. If you win something and you haven’t put everything into it, you haven’t actually achieved anything at all. When you’ve had to work hard for something and you’ve got the best you can out of yourself on that given day, that’s where you get satisfaction from.” -Ian Thorpe
3) “It’s what you do with the rough patches that will define the athlete that you’ll become.” –Dana Vollmer
4) “I have been visualizing myself every night for the past four years standing on the podium having the gold placed around my neck.” -Megan Quann
5) “I can’t control what everyone else swims but if all goes well I know there are no limits.” –leisel Jones
6) “I can definitely take more off my world record – a lot more. I have no doubt about that. I’m by no means putting pressure on myself, it’s just the belief I have in myself…I’m not going to limit myself by nominating times or anything like that. I never thought I’d do 14:34 and I did. I thought I’d maybe do 14:38 or 14:39 that day, and I went nearly five seconds quicker so I don’t want to limit the possibilities”. -Grant Hackett
7) “There are younger, stronger swimmers coming up and they are hungry. I can’t influence what they do, I only know what I can do and I know how greedy I am to defend my title.” -Kirsty Coventry
8) “Most of the preparedness happens during training every single day, so it’s all about getting to a meet and being as relaxed as possible. Personally, I just try to stay in the crowd of people, just talking so my mind doesn’t think only about swimming. That helps me to relax. And at this level, we all know what needs to be done once we jump in the pool”. -Lenny Krayzelburg
9) “If you’re not on your ‘A’ game in our workouts every day, you’re going to get absolutely smoked.” -Michael Phelps
10) “I’ve just been enjoying the training a bit more. I’ve put too much pressure on myself in the past. Just relax and let it come. I just went out there to have a bit of fun tonight.” -Sophie Edington
