The goal of spa water treatment is to maintain hygienic and clear water without costing an arm and leg and without hours of daily maintenance. We want you and your family to enjoy your spa; not to spend time worrying about how to balance the water or issues such as itchy skin and toxic fumes!
The five basics of water balancing are: pH, Total Alkalinity, Sanitizer, Water Hardness, and Total dissolved solids (TDS). We will discuss one per month. Let’s begin with pH which some consider to be the most important component of water balance.
Spas, due to their small volume, are prone to fluctuations in pH, so this parameter must be monitored closely. Use test strips or test kits employing liquid reagents to analyze water quality. The ideal pH range for spas is 7.2 to 7.8. Any reading below 7.2 means your water is acidic. To correct this, you would add Spa Up. If the pH reading is above 7.8, it means the water is basic or alkaline. To correct this, you would add Spa Down.
Water with low pH can cause corrosion of metal components such as heating elements, pump seals, and cause eye and skin irritation.
Water with high pH can lead to scale formation on plumbing and surfaces, cloudy water, and eye and skin irritation.
Check back next month as we discuss Total Alkalinity, the following month Sanitizer, Water Hardness, and then Total Dissolved Solids. Mastering these five areas of water balancing will allow you and your family hours of enjoyment- not hours of upkeep.
Happen to have a cover for your hot tub? The importance of selecting a proper hot tub cover cannot be stressed enough. Maybe you’re buying your first hot tub and you’re not sure which cover to buy. Or maybe you are replacing an old worn that is worn out, faded, and ugly. Either way, let’s get into some of the details of hot tub covers so you can better select the right hot tub cover for you.
The very first piece of criteria that you will want to look at is the thickness and density of your foam core. Selecting a cover with the appropriate amount of foam is very dependent on where you live. For an indoor hot tub, you can go with the cheapest option. These come with a one pound core that is tapered and goes from four inches at its thickest to two and a half inches at its thinnest. From there, your options gradually increase until you reach the densest core that comes in at two pounds. The thickest part of this core is five inches and tapers down to three inches. You would want this type of cover if you planned on your hot tub being covered in snow at any point.
The next item that you’ll want to look into is the vapor barrier in your cover. The quality of the vapor barrier is a factor to consider when you don’t want water collecting between the material in the foam. When deciding on which hot tub cover you are going to buy, make sure to inquire about the quality of the vapor barrier in your cover. This ensures that your spa is getting the best care available.
The last thing to research when buying your hot tub cover is the vinyl layer itself. This is the outside material of your cover that will have direct contact with the elements. The sun is the number one destroyer of this aspect of the cover, so it is important to make sure that you are purchasing the highest quality possible. This will allow the rest of the components inside of the cover to work to their best ability for as long as possible.
Remember to take your time when selecting your hot tub cover because it is the first line of defense for your spa. If you want your spa to last, make sure that the cover will last just as long. If you have any questions, please call your local dealer and they can send you in the right direction depending on your spa’s needs.
With the New Year upon us, it’s time to welcome a stress-free year by implementing your hot tub into your daily routine. Hot Tubs have been scientifically shown to reduce stress. With a hot tub, we can help you alleviate and manage stress that is a part of your everyday life to help make sure you are feeling better as well as suffering from less stress related damage to your body. Here are some important benefits of soaking in a hot tub, and ways that it will help you reduce your stress level.
Studies have shown the benefits of raising your body temperature for 15-20 minutes a day as a cure for sleeplessness and insomnia. If you get more sleep, you will feel more rested and this will reduce the amount of stress you feel during the day.
Hot tubs can increase circulation which relieves muscle and joint pain in many cases, even arthritis. Having relaxed muscles that are free of pain is a crucial way to feel better, and reduce stress throughout the day. If you feel better physically, you will be much less stressed.
Relaxing in warm water can help to release endorphin, which is similar to the feeling you get after a long run or bike run. When your body releases endorphin, it gives you an almost euphoric feeling, and this is an amazing boost in your emotional state. You will be more relaxed, less anxious, less depressed, and less stressed.
The warm water and massage provided by the jets in a hot tub can reduce headaches and tension. Headaches are stressful, so this powerful tool to relieve pain and tension will make you feel much better.
The buoyancy of the water allows for relief on joints and lower back pain leading to relaxation and better sleeping patterns. Once again, hot tubs are fantastic for helping you feel relaxed and rested.
Hot tubs are proven to relax you, and this is crucial for starting the New Year off right. Make it your New Year resolution to use your hot tub as often as possible to bring a joyful and stress-free 2017. If you would like to learn more about how to properly maintain your hot tub, contact us today!

Do people drain their spa in the winter? If they do, maybe they shouldn’t because it could potentially be when a spa would get the most use! There are fewer things more satisfying than sitting in a nice hot tub on a cold winter evening. However, there are a few precautions you should take to have a winter season of relaxation and bliss in your hot tub, so make sure to use these great tricks for wintertime fun in your spa!
Know Your Hot Tub
Knowing your hot tub can help you make the best winter preparations. Know your hot tub controls, and the diagnostic messages and warnings (or at least know where your owner’s manual is).
Stock up on Waters Choice
Winter is not the time to run out of your favorite enzyme. Dealing with icky water during cold weather really puts a damper on enjoying the hot tub experience.
Power Outages and Water Levels
If you lose power during the winter months, make sure you keep the insulated cover on the hot tub. If the power outage persists, a good trick is to setup a working light in the power pack compartment of your hot tub. The heat generated should keep your power pack from freezing.
Keep an eye on your tub water level. Low water levels can cause your pumps to quit functioning, the water in the tub to freeze, and damage to not only the hot tub but also to the plumbing fixtures and parts. Assure that the tub maintains its temperature so the piping does not freeze.
Getting to the hot tub
You should also have somewhere to place your clothing, footwear, and other belongings in the area closest to your hot tub. This will keep them warm and dry while you enjoy your time in the spa. An outdoor towel warmer would be a wonderful addition to your spa experience knowing that it will be very cold once you leave the heat of your spa. You may also want to wear some type of hat or headgear to keep your hair dry while using the tub.
Clear pathway for safety
Be sure to keep a clear path to your tub. Be sure to keep ice and/or snow off your path for safety reasons. Also use a good soft bristle broom to remove snow and ice from the top of your hot tub cover (No shovels or hard metal objects as they may damage the vinyl on the cover). You do not want snow and ice to accumulate on the top of your cover over the winter, or you may have to replace it in the spring.
Yes, winter can be cold, but with these tips, you can enjoy soaking in your spa all year long. Using your spa on a cold winter evening is a fantastic way to relax, and you will absolutely love it! If you would like to learn more about how to properly maintain your pool and spa, contact us today!
(Hint – When was the last time you cleaned your filter?)
There are few things more refreshing than jumping into a crystal clear pool on a hot summer day. Keeping your pool fresh, clean, and beautiful is an important job, and the maintenance work you put in really pays off in the summer. However, what do you do if you come outside one day, and your water has become cloudy and not as appealing as it was previously? Here is some advice to help get you through this tough situation.
If your water is cloudy, a common culprit is not enough filtration. If your water is cloudy, we recommend cleaning your pleated filter or filters at least once per week. Once your water is clear, you can stretch it out to only once or twice a month. Filtration run time is another way to clear cloudy water. Your spa should have the filter cycle run 6 to 8 hours a day if your water is cloudy or if you have very heavy use (such as a party of kids). If you only use your spa once a week or less, you can probably get by with only filtering 2 hours a day. Normal usage should have a filtration cycle of 4-8 hours a day. Please see your owner’s manual on how to change the filter cycle.
For additional help with filtration, we have designed filter savers. This filter media is designed to filter down to 10 microns. This allows us to capture much smaller particulates and clean the water more than two times better than the common pleated filters. This filter media is cloth and is very easy to clean, allowing you to use this filter over and over. Check out our video about filtration here. Don’t let cloudy water ruin your relaxation.
Having cloudy pool water is a frustrating problem, but if you follow these steps, your water should be crystal clear in no time. To learn more about proper pool and spa maintenance, contact us today!
Stress can be good and stress can be bad. Stress can get you motivated into positive action but it can also affect your lifestyle in a negative way.
Stress hormones are released by your body during highly stressful situations and they can cause your cells to age, making you look older. In severe cases, stress can cause diabetes and heart disease which can lead to death.
Knowing how to handle stressful events in your life is key to maintaining your stress level. Stress relief is essential in keeping a healthy mind and body. There are many methods of relieving stress such as taking medications but the safest way is to use natural stress relief options.
The warm water of a hot tub has been shown to help balance your nervous system and to keep it in balance. It is believed that warm water immersion encourages the release of a hormone, dopa-mine. Dopa-mine is released by the parasympathetic nervous system in our bodies to combat the effects of harmful stress.
Aromatherapy relieves stress by using scents that can calm you down. Aromatherapy uses essential oils extracted from plants. These essential oils are the main ingredients used to reduce stress. The scent of essential oils sends messages to the olfactory receptors in your nose, thus soothing your anxiety.
The olfactory receptors are linked in your brain which controls your emotions. Aromatherapy effectively reduces stress by stimulating some chemicals in your brain which makes you feel more relaxed. Check out our wonderful Waters Choice aromatherapy scents. hyperlink
No other natural stress relief options can be more rewarding than taking care of your pet animals and treating them like they are one of your closest friends or even family members. Interacting with your pet after a busy day at work greatly lowers your stress levels. You will get better results in relieving your stress by spending more time bonding with your pet. The most common pets for stress relief are dogs but you can also try other pets that you like such as fish or a cat.
Playing with your pet is one of the best methods for stress relief because it lowers your blood pressure, thus slowing down the production of your body’s stress hormone called cortical which is linked to anxiety and depression. Spending some time with your pet can also increase your body’s production of a hormone known as Oxycontin which is associated with relaxation and happiness. Did you know Waters Choice products are safe for your pets?

Most people look at their hot tub completely as a recreational device. They buy a hot tub with the intent to relax, and enjoy a comfortable and fun experience soaking in the tub. While this is great and it is important to enjoy time spent in the hot tub, most people completely overlook one of the hot tubs best uses. Hot tubs excel in the role of improving health and wellness through the practice of hydrotherapy.
Hydrotherapy is the use of water massage to help relieve many different medical issues and conditions, as well as improve many functions of the body. The practice of hydrotherapy has been used for centuries, and the ancient Greeks and Romans depended on this healing technique to improve many of their common health issues. Hydrotherapy combines three of nature’s most powerful healing agents heat, water, and air to help gently massage the body and relieve the body of several ailments, aches, and pains. While hydrotherapy is commonly used in hospitals and treatment centers across the world, you can experience the power of this practice in the comfort of your own hot tub.
Many people are curious how hydrotherapy affects the body during their first 15 minutes. Typically when practicing hydrotherapy, your pulse and blood pressure will begin to drop during the first 5 minutes. After about 8 minutes your hands and feet will begin to feel warmer because of an increase in circulation. After about 13 minutes your muscles will feel more loose and receptive to exercise. Finally, after 15 minutes your body will feel more relaxed and pain will decrease.
Hydrotherapy is an amazingly beneficial practice that you can do at home in the comfort of your own hot tub. This practice has been used for centuries, and is key in relieving several health conditions, as well as improving your health in many ways. Make sure to check out part 2 of this entry to see a list of the health benefits hydrotherapy provides, as well as an overview on how to successfully practice this amazing health technique.
