The goal of spa water treatment is to maintain hygienic and clear water without costing an arm and leg and without hours of daily maintenance. We want you and your family to enjoy your spa; not to spend time worrying about how to balance the water or issues such as itchy skin and toxic fumes!
The five basics of water balancing are: pH, Total Alkalinity, Sanitizer, Water Hardness, and Total dissolved solids (TDS). We will discuss one per month. Let’s begin with pH which some consider to be the most important component of water balance.
Spas, due to their small volume, are prone to fluctuations in pH, so this parameter must be monitored closely. Use test strips or test kits employing liquid reagents to analyze water quality. The ideal pH range for spas is 7.2 to 7.8. Any reading below 7.2 means your water is acidic. To correct this, you would add Spa Up. If the pH reading is above 7.8, it means the water is basic or alkaline. To correct this, you would add Spa Down.
Water with low pH can cause corrosion of metal components such as heating elements, pump seals, and cause eye and skin irritation.
Water with high pH can lead to scale formation on plumbing and surfaces, cloudy water, and eye and skin irritation.
Check back next month as we discuss Total Alkalinity, the following month Sanitizer, Water Hardness, and then Total Dissolved Solids. Mastering these five areas of water balancing will allow you and your family hours of enjoyment- not hours of upkeep.
National … Hot Tub Day? While there are a millions designated “days” from national pancake day (which happens probably 20 times a year) to national National Happiness Day (March 20) and World Party Day (April 14) which fall on the sides of this day of celebrating your favorite backyard activity, spa relaxing. In addition, most of us lead very busy lives and spend little time on ourselves. Why not spend a day on yourself and unwind? An entire day for hot tubbing? That is a national day you can get behind – move over, Kale. “Turn off the phone, unplug the TV and take a few hours to pamper yourself. Today is the day to grab a refreshing cocktail, doff your skivvies and hop ever so gently into the nearest hot tub. Sit back, chill and feel all the tensions of the world melt away in the warm embrace of the bubbles and steam.
In an interview reprinted by the “Chicago Tribune,” Atlanta Spa & Leisure owner Adam Burke told “The Atlanta Journal-Constitution” that relaxation and stress relief are the top reasons customers purchase hot tubs. According to the American Heart Association, heat from hot-water spas leads to a process called vasodilation, or the widening of blood vessels. As the blood vessels open up, tension and pain can also loosen their grip on the body. The AARP also notes that hot water is known for its soothing properties, which can be enhanced by aromatherapy with essential oils, whereas cold water is an inflammation fighter
In addition to being super relaxing and fun, hot tubs have many other benefits. They offer a relaxing, warm-water environment that combines buoyancy and massaging jets, making them a practical and a reliable tool for many types of therapy. From the relief of general discomfort to the specialized treatment of medical conditions, hot tubs promote diverse aspects of health and wellness when used under the guidance of medical experts. Before undertaking a therapeutic hot-tub regimen, ensure that a physician has cleared you for hydrotherapy and high-heat conditions.

“My hot tub is running but there’s nothing coming through the jets. What’s wrong?”
There are many reasons this could be occurring, and it could be as simple as the jets not being open. But it could also be an air lock which is simple to fix. Air locks occur when the water level drops too low or after a water change, and air gets trapped in the lines or equipment. There are sensors in the hot tub that detect water flow or water line pressure to protect the hot tub heater from coming on when the water is not flowing past the heater element fast enough. When an air lock occurs, it is common for these sensors to detect low flow or low pressure, which results in the heater being disabled until the problem is fixed. If you have recently drained and refilled your spa and one of your pumps is not working, it’s most likely an air lock. Follow these steps to determine if it is an airlock and how to fix it.
-Identify which pump is not running.
-Determine if a reset button has clicked out on it.
-Make sure reset button is in
-Confirm the shaft is in fact spinning.
-Use a hammer and a screwdriver to loosen the union to allow the air to escape that’s being in there. Because what it is the airlock is just staying and it’s circulating, but it’s not allowing any of the water to move.
-Now simply back it off a bit, not too far, because you don’t want it to pop right off. You’re only going to do about like, say, one revolution. Water is going to come out, some air’s going to come out.
-The pump is going to surge and it will start running again.
-It might take up to 3-4 minutes. Then once it’s running again, you will have more water.
-Now tighten it up again, but not too tight. Just snug it up good to stop it from leaking.
-That’s it. The airlock is now gone.
-You may receive an error message on the topside control display, such as “FLO.” This is normal and a useful safety feature. Do not disable this feature, fix the root of the problem instead.
If after checking to assure they jets are not simply closed, follow these steps to efficiently unclog your jets. If this doesn’t work, you may need to contact a professional to assist you with unclogging your tub because you don’t want anything to stop you from enjoying fun and relaxation in your spa!

As we all know, there are some important rules to follow if you want to keep your hot tub running in optimal condition. There’s cleaning that needs to take place daily if possible by circulating the water. There’s weekly filter cleanings that should be done, and there’s drain and cleans that should occur as well. Part of filling your spa back up with new water includes adding new spa treatment too. In order for your spa to be as clean as possible and to operate without interruption, you should look into balancing your water as best as you can. Here are some tips for balancing the water in your hot tub.
The first item that you will want to focus on is the pH level. The pH level should be between 7.2 and 7.8. Grab some test strips HERE. Once you’ve tested your water, the instructions that come with the test strips will inform you on how you can adjust your water to get it into that perfect range.
The next item to look at is alkalinity. For this level, you should be aiming between 80 to 120 parts per million (ppm). This is very similar to the previous step. Simply talk to your local dealer or order some test strips online and follow the instructions as necessary. This will ensure your spa’s alkalinity level is in that sweet spot.
Once your water is balanced, you will want to check the hardness of your water in order to avoid corrosion and foaming. Once again, test strips work best here. Calcium levels will differ depending on the source of your water, but you’re looking to get the levels between 100 and 250 ppm. Simply add more calcium to increase to desired levels, or add scale control to decrease to get under 250 ppm.
The last step is adding your chlorine. The levels that you are shooting for here are 3 to 5 ppm. You will want to check your chlorine levels at least once a week, but more often wouldn’t hurt. Keeping your hot tub sanitized is an important step that should not be overlooked.
If you are able to follow all of these steps, your hot tub will treat you with endless soaks in your future. The water will remain clean, and you and your friends can enjoy the wonderful benefits of owning your own hot tub. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact your local dealer and they can fill you in on any confusing details.

This makes movement easier which encourages you to work out joints and muscles which would normally cause you pain.
e already covered the obvious fact that hot tubs can be relaxing, but did you know that there are long term relaxation impacts to soaking often? Most pool and spa cleaning products are similar in that they use tons of powerful chemicals to disinfect water. Unfortunately, these harsh chemicals not only harm bad bacteria and viruses, but they also harm our loved ones and us as well! This is what makes Waters Choice so different, unique, and better. Our products use the powerful cleaning power of enzymes to help make sure your water is perfectly clean, while drastically reducing the amount of unwanted chemicals your family is exposed to. Here is some great information about the power of our enzyme treatment for pools and spas.
Enzymes are natural, biodegradable, and organic. Enzymes also break down oils and aid in the filtration process to remove unnecessary metals and minerals. Enzymes leave your water feeling like actual fresh water. Enzymes and Chlorine are a great two-layer sanitation system for swimming pool water, but since enzymes do all the hard work, Chlorine demand goes down to .5-1 PPM (typical chlorine pools operate with 3-5 PPM chlorine). Not only can you keep a smaller residual, it takes a lot less chlorine to do so. Chlorine just simply isn’t being used up as quickly, so swimmers are exposed to much less of it. Our products help make sure your pool and spa water is completely clean, amazingly fresh, fantastically healthy, and amazingly gentle on skin. You will love the way your water feels after using Waters Choice, and swimming in your pool will feel like swimming in a natural spring. You should enjoy swimming in your pool with water that feels like actual fresh water. If you are sick of the way your pool water makes you feel, you need to try out our products. You have tried the other kind of sanitizes, now come see what you have been missing!
The cleaning power of enzymes can be used to make your pool and spa feel incredibly clean, fresh, and amazing. Enzymes are such an amazing tool for pool and spa maintenance because they are effective at cleaning, but also completely natural.
The best pools have enzymes and chlorine. For crystal clear water with a lot less chemicals, use Waters Choice! If you would like to learn more about our fantastic products, contact us today!

The holiday season is upon us, and that means it’s time to relax and enjoy some time with your loved ones. Traveling during this time can be completely hectic and stressful, but if you follow these holiday travel tips, you will get to your destination without too much of a headache and get to enjoy your vacation with your family and friends.
Book travel plans as early as possible- The holiday season is a crazy time to travel, and flights, car rentals, hotels, and other travel arrangements book up quickly. Try to make your plans as early as possible, and book your travel arrangements as soon as you can.
Travel as light as possible- Airports during the holidays are usually completely crazy, and you may need to move quickly to get to your next flight. The last thing you need is a bunch of unnecessary luggage to slow you down while running to your gate. Make sure to only bring the necessities when traveling during the holidays.
Leave early- Leave yourself a little bit of extra time to get places during the holiday season to account for crowded roads, airports, train stations, and more. You never know what will be slowed down during the holiday rush, so make sure to give yourself some extra time so you aren’t late.
Bring snacks- Eating on the road or in airports can be tough during the holiday season because of the added rush of people. Do people drain their spa in the winter? If they do, maybe they shouldn’t because it could potentially be when a spa would get the most use! There are fewer things more satisfying than sitting in a nice hot tub on a cold winter evening. However, there are a few precautions you should take to have a winter season of relaxation and bliss in your hot tub, so make sure to use these great tricks for wintertime fun in your spa!
Know Your Hot Tub
Knowing your hot tub can help you make the best winter preparations. Know your hot tub controls, and the diagnostic messages and warnings (or at least know where your owner’s manual is).
Stock up on Waters Choice
Winter is not the time to run out of your favorite enzyme. Dealing with icky water during cold weather really puts a damper on enjoying the hot tub experience.
Power Outages and Water Levels
If you lose power during the winter months, make sure you keep the insulated cover on the hot tub. If the power outage persists, a good trick is to setup a working light in the power pack compartment of your hot tub. The heat generated should keep your power pack from freezing.
Keep an eye on your tub water level. Low water levels can cause your pumps to quit functioning, the water in the tub to freeze, and damage to not only the hot tub but also to the plumbing fixtures and parts. Assure that the tub maintains its temperature so the piping does not freeze.
Getting to the hot tub
You should also have somewhere to place your clothing, footwear, and other belongings in the area closest to your hot tub. This will keep them warm and dry while you enjoy your time in the spa. An outdoor towel warmer would be a wonderful addition to your spa experience knowing that it will be very cold once you leave the heat of your spa. You may also want to wear some type of hat or headgear to keep your hair dry while using the tub.
Clear pathway for safety
Be sure to keep a clear path to your tub. Be sure to keep ice and/or snow off your path for safety reasons. Also use a good soft bristle broom to remove snow and ice from the top of your hot tub cover (No shovels or hard metal objects as they may damage the vinyl on the cover). You do not want snow and ice to accumulate on the top of your cover over the winter, or you may have to replace it in the spring.
Yes, winter can be cold, but with these tips, you can enjoy soaking in your spa all year long. Using your spa on a cold winter evening is a fantastic way to relax, and you will absolutely love it! If you would like to learn more about how to properly maintain your pool and spa, contact us today!
